Performing IVC Filter Placement and Removal
IVC Filter Placement and Removal
IVC Filter Placement:
Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are small devices that can easily be placed into the body to prevent blood clots from traveling to the lungs, or pulmonary embolism. IVC filters may be placed in patients with blood clots (venous thrombosis) who cannot safely receive blood thinners, in high-risk patients, or in patients who do not have blood clots but are at risk for developing pulmonary embolism (e.g. trauma patients or patients undergoing surgery who will have relatively long recovery periods). Our physicians are very highly experienced at placing filters safely, and have a very high success rate of eventual removal or retrieval of the IVC filters.
IVC Filter Removal:
Our physicians specialize in the removal/retrieval of IVC filters. Filters placed up to 1 1/2 years ago may be able to removed, based on certain factors. If you have had an IVC filter placed for any reason, very often it can be removed. Feel free to contact us regarding whether you may be a candidate for IVC filter retrieval.
Dr. Montague specializes in the difficult removal of IVC filters, and can often successfully remove filters that were not able to be removed by other physicians.
