Treatment of Kidney Tumors
Surgery is the standard treatment for malignant kidney tumors. However, there are certain circumstances where surgery cannot be performed or is not indicated. For example, the patient may not be a surgical candidate based on other health problems, or may have had kidney problems or removal (nephrectomy) of the other kidney in the past. In these circumstances, thermal ablation (RFA or cryoablation) can be performed our physicians with relatively minimal anesthesia; all accomplished through a needle with high-tech, innonvative devices.
Benign kidney tumors and lesions can also be treated using minimally invasive techniques. Painful kidney cysts are easily drained and sclerosed using small needles under imaging guidance. Angiomyolipomas can be embolized using vascular techniques to prevent bleeding (see vascular and arterial disorders).
