Pain Relief with Vertebroplasty
Vertebroplasty is a minimally-invasive, innovative procedure that is highly effective in relieving the severe, debilitating pain associated with acute vertebral compression fractures. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with IV sedation, with a minimal recovery period. Bone cement is injected into the vertebral body to stabilize the fracture and reduce or eliminate pain. The entire procedure is done in our advanced Interventional Radiology suites directly under imaging guidance, by an imaging-guided procedure specialist (Interventional Radiologist).
You may have heard about some recent negative press on vertebroplasty, describing it as ineffective or even as a "sham procedure". This was mainly because the results of a study published focused on long-term differences and did not adequately address the tremendous amount of pain relief patients experience in the short term after a vertebroplasty for acute fracture. The vast majority of physicians who perform vertebroplasty, those who send their patients to us for vertebroplasty, and patients who have received vertebroplasty believe that the treatment is highly effective and low-risk. Please see our patient testimonials describing immediate and often full pain relief, with return to normal activity within hours.
