Liver Tumor Treatment

Liver cancer and liver metastases can be devastating diagnoses. However, with the advancement of medical technology and the field of Interventional Radiology, there are now many more options for treatment of liver tumors than conventional chemotherapy. SDI Interventional Radiologists are highly specialized doctors that can utilize medical imaging technology to perform a multitude of liver tumor treatment procedures that uniquely and precisely target liver cancer and liver metastases. Ask your oncologist about these liver tumor treatment options, and/or contact us directly for a consultation to see if you are a candidate for one of the many types of treatment of liver tumors we offer.

Types of Interventional Radiology liver tumor treatment:

- Liver cancer radioembolization

- Liver cancer chemoembolization

- Radiofrequency ablation

Radioembolization is a promising new treatment for primary liver cancer and liver metastases. It can be performed at time of first diagnosis of liver cancer, or for liver metastases that have not responded well to chemotherapy. This liver tumor treatment is also called Sir Spheres therapy. The procedure entirely done through a small nick in the skin, where the physician enters the femoral artery to gain access to the liver arterial system. A tiny catheter is placed directly into the arteries feeding the liver metastases, and microscopic beads which emit high-dose radiation therapy are delivered directly to the tumors.

Liver chemoembolization is an innovative treatment for primary liver cancer and liver metastases. It is a highly specialized treatment of liver tumors that can be performed as a primary therapy, or for tumors that have not responded well to chemotherapy. The treatment is done through a small nick in the skin, where the physician enters the femoral artery to gain access to the arterial system. A tiny catheter is placed directly into the arteries feeding the liver tumors, and microscopic beads coated with chemotherapy are delivered directly to the tumors.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively new, high-tech method of treatment of liver tumors. Under the imaging guidance of a CT scan, a small probe is inserted into the liver metastases. Through the probe, very small tines can be temporarily deployed which create a spherical field of thermal energy (heating) which kill the tumor but spare the normal surrounding tissue. This is a highly specialized liver tumor treatment performed by SDI Interventional Radiologists.
